title: "ENC 1102: Major Assignments" author: - Glenn S. Ritchey III created: 2025-05-29 tags: - assignments - majorassignments - syllabus
Complete, edit, and submit all major writing assignments by the due date. Assignments must meet the criteria listed to fulfill the contract (this includes due date, length, and genre-based learning outcomes that we will determine as a class). You are expected to sustain effort and investment on each draft of all major writing assignments. If you submit a final project that has not been revised and/or does not meet the writing dimensions we establish, it will be marked “late” and returned. When you submit each draft, you will be asked to analyze and reflect on your writing based on the writing dimensions we establish. This will also be your opportunity to explain what you believe to be the strengths of your project, as well as what issues you would like me to consider as a reader. This is part of your project, and I cannot give you the best advice and feedback unless you help contextualize your work for me.
Revision: Make substantive revisions when the assignment is to revise—extending or changing the thinking, focus, style, or organization—not just editing or touching up. Remember, revision is reseeing, and your goal should be to take advantage of the unique opportunity of a contract-based class and the revisions it allows.
Research: One of the goals for this class is to provide you with the information you need to become successful researchers, and this means conducting research that goes beyond a Google search. There are times Google is an appropriate tool for research, but you will be expected, throughout our course, to understand when it is appropriate and to illustrate your ability to uncover information to answer our class inquiries in more sophisticated ways when the rhetorical situation calls for primary or academic research.
Due: See Canvas You will write an academic research proposal. A research proposal addresses a topic, provides a literature review, research questions, aims and objectives, describes design and methods, and offers a conclusion.
Due: Week 11 As you prepare for your research essay, I want you to read and annotate scholarship. This scholarship should provide a framework about your topic, including the ways in which researchers have approached, theorized, and designed studies around your topic. This should provide an opportunity for you to listen, understand, and enter the academic conversation and extend it by incorporating your own ideas and arguments. You will write an annotated bibliography with 8 minimum sources that are cited based on your disciplinary norms (e.g., MLA or APA).
Due: Week 14 Your research essay will be 8-10 pages. You will also be required to create a multimodal presentation where you showcase and present (~5 min) your research using images, video, audio, etc.
Due: During Finals A purposeful and thoughtful digital collection that curates and showcases your major writing assignments, as well as other useful information and activities that relate to our course and learning outcomes. This site is a metacognitive reflection on your experiences and learning in the class. It should demonstrate your understanding and achievement of the course outcomes.
